This weekend I watched a film set in a Japanese high school, about three Japanese girls who invite a Korean exchange student to join their band to play three punk songs for a high school music festival. And unlike most Japanese films I’ve seen involving high school (or really any movie involving high school lately), there were no ghosts, murders, suicides, sex, ninjas, or any sort of violence. No popular students vs. the nerds showdown. There was no rival band comprised of jerks. Just a small, contrivance free, gem of a film about four girls trying to learn three songs, and becoming friends along the way. "Linda Linda Linda" is one of my favorite movies this year.
