Did you read Richard "The Hot Zone" Preston’s "An Error in the Code" in the New Yorker yet? His story about Lesch-Nyhan syndrome, is the scariest thing I’ve ever read. The rare genetic syndrome not only causes what looks like cerebral palsy and retardation, it also makes a person pee crystals, and want to chew their own fingers and lips off. Some do. When they get older, they start thinking of more devious ways to hurt themselves. If they like someone, they will hurl verbal and physical abuse at the person. All the while fully aware and horrified by their own actions but unable to control their hands, their teeth, their tongues. It’s like the devil has got a hold of ‘em…
