Paul McCarthy
October 24, 2007 · No Comments
The pig I mentioned seeing in my previous post was by the artist Paul McCarthy. This description of his previous work in Wikipedia made me laugh/wince:
An example of this is his 1976 piece Class Fool, where McCarthy threw himself around a ketchup spattered UCSD classroom until dazed and injured. He then vomited several times and inserted a Barbie doll into his rectum.[1] The piece ended when the audience could no longer stand to watch his performance.
True? I have no idea. ubu.com has some videos of his performance art here. Maybe you can find out for me? Wow, I’ve never seen ubu.com before. They have a ton of resources to browse. I’m on it right now watching a BBC documentary about J.G. Ballard.

Oct. 27 Anti-war Rally
October 24, 2007 · No Comments
Calling all commies, rabble-rousers and peaceniks! March against the war! This Saturday thousands of people from hundreds of local and regional organizations will meet at Union Park at 1:30 pm local time. From Union Park the mass will march through downtown Chicago and finally rally at Federal Plaza at 4:00 pm local time. Everyone is invited. Even the 2 people in 5 years that I’ve met who are pro-war, they are going, but I think just to meet girls.
This event in Chicago is one of 12 in the U.S. billed as “National Mobilization to End the Iraq War.”

Tiger Tree
October 24, 2007 · 1 Comment

Residents of Padrame near Kokkoda in Uppinangady forest range sighted one such carnivorous tree trying to dine on a cow last Thursday. Uppinangady range forest officer (RFO) Subramanya Rao said the tree was described as ‘pili mara’ (tiger tree) in native lingo.
I am trying to find an exporter to send me 20 sapplings. I’ll raise them on steaks and then unleash them on you.

Panther Style Engagement
October 22, 2007 · No Comments
My friend Dan, drummer in the Chicago band, Panther Style, got engaged to his bandmate, Melissa, recently. Instead of a diamond ring, he got Melissa, the guitarist in the band, something way more useful:

Maybe Melissa will get Dan an engagement iPhone?

In response to this I threw that up in a hurry. I love that Dumbledore’s gay. It makes so much sense and adds a complexity to the books with something I had not thought of for some reason.

Lunar New Year observances at Saidaiji Temple in Okayama, Japan,
traditionally include this feat of human performance. For a ceremony known as hadaka matsuri, a roomful of men grapple in total darkness to find camphor-scented batons
tossed into the fray by the temple priest. via Lia, via this Ask Metafilter question.
