I’m reading Margaret Atwood’s “Cat’s Eye” for the first time—I know, so late—and she mentions a dessert I’ve never heard of called a “Junket” involving tablets:

“Perversely I long for the desserts of my childhood, the desserts of war, simple and inexpensive and bland: tapioca pudding, with its gelatinous fish eyes, Jell-O caramel pudding, Junket. Junket was made with white tablets that came out of a tube, and served with a dollop of grape jelly on the top. Probably it’s vanished by now.”

My summer drink right now is the Pimm’s Cup. With cucumber, please. I’m still trying to figure out what variation tastes the best. I think I’ll try adding orange slices and mint along with the cucumber.

I like the 2008 Chicago Reader’s Best of list. If you don’t live in Chicago but plan on visiting sometime soon, I’d bookmark it. Oh, and for me, I liked the Chicago Reader’s picks more than the readers’ picks. I think it’s usually that way in best of lists.

These customer reviews of a bicycle shop called Sportif Importer Ltd. are fascinating. I almost want to go just to see if they are as rude as people say.
